Grocery Stores

  • The area of the store shall be not less than 130ft2.
  • The storage area must be cooled and provide stainless steel tables and pallets.
  • Refrigerators and freezers must be provided, as must stainless steel shelves and stands for displaying the food items.
  • There must be a separate and isolated area to display bakery products.
  • Food items must not be displayed in the cashier area.

    Third Paragraph

Supermarkets and Department Stores – Union Cooperative Societies

  • The total area for a supermarket shall be at least 2000ft2, including a store area of not less than 500ft2, which must be connected to the supermarket for daily use and comply with all storage requirements.
  • The total area for a department store shall be at least 5000ft2, including a store area of not less than 500ft2, which must be connected to the supermarket for daily use and comply with all of the store’s requirements
  • Refrigeration and freezers for food items must be provided, complete with thermometers.
  • The preparing or selling of sandwiches, meals or drinks is not permissible.
  • There should be double-bowl stainless steel sinks for washing fruits and vegetables.
  • In the case of an activity such as butchery, bakery or the supply of fish, an additional area is required and must meet all relevant regulations.

Mini Marts

  • The storage area must be cooled and supplied with stainless steel shelves and pallets.
  • Stainless steel shelves and pallets must be used to display food items.
  • Refrigeration and freezers must be provided, as must equipment to keep hot food items.
  • There must be a special and separate area to display bakery products, and no food items whatsoever must be displayed in the cash counter area.
