Five Winter Food Tips ‘Eat Well, Stay Healthy This Winter’

Main Photo copy  There is no doubt that we spend more times indoors in winter, even in such traditionally sun-drenched places as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and countries throughout Africa & Middle East. This is especially true if the oven is on and delicious smells are wafting out of the kitchen!

With a change in seasons, there comes a change in our lifestyle … and often our health. The reason for this is simple: due to the lower temperatures our bodies emit more heat, which is a form of energy. So we need more energy in the winter season. With this in mind:

1-    We need to eat more in the winter. But if we don’t get a healthy, balanced diet, we risk the lunchtime visit to our favourite restaurant becoming an afternoon visit to the doctor.

Second Point copy2-    It’s not only the heat of the grill or oven that makes us feel so good in winter, its warming foods such as Soups, root vegetables (like carrots) and cruciferous vegetables (like cabbage).

Third Point copy3-    Some of the Middle East’s most nourishing and healthy foods can keep you warmer, and guard against winter viruses. Roasted chestnuts (castanah) over an open fire are a winter treat, and can also be added to rice dishes for extra nourishment. They add nuttiness to stews too.

Forth Point copy4-    Winter is also the ideal season for getting together with friends and family for a good meal. Whether that is at home or in a favourite restaurant or cafe, the sharing of food can be one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences of winter.

Fifth Point copy5-    So time spent in the kitchen is not only good for your physical health, it’s good for your mental health, particularly, as is often the case in fast-moving cities such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, if you are working hard and under stress.

6-    Do not forget to drink the optimal amount of water too; this is as necessary in the winter months as it is in summer. In fact, with the winter season here, it’s more important than ever to consume the right amount of water for your health.

And of course, as we are fully aware of at Al Halabi, whether you are using the oven, grill, frying pan or hob, variety is the spice of life – strive for a balanced diet and stay healthy!
